The terrorist death cult
Those who maintain that people who turn themselves into human bombs are driven to such acts by despair, and that their behaviour can only be explained by extreme poverty and dispossession, should ponder the words of Reem al-Rayashee, the 22 year-old mother of two infants who blew herself up at the Erez crossing point from Israel into Gaza taking four security guards with her and wounding seven others. The Times reports her words on the videotape explaining her actions: '“It was always my wish to turn my body into deadly shrapnel against the Zionists and knock on the doors of Heaven with the skulls of Zionists,” she said. “I always wanted to be the first (Hamas) woman to carry out a martyrdom operation where parts of my body can fly all over.” She said, smiling at times, that she had the dreams since she was 13. “God gave me two children and I loved them so much. Only God knew how much I loved them.” She asked that her children should study in religious schools.' These are not words of despair. These are words of exultation. This is the language of hysterical, demented brainwashing. It is the language of fanatical hatred. This woman had everything to live for. She was not poor; she came from a wealthy family. She had two tiny children who she loved. Her family is reportedly distraught. They cannot believe she could have abandoned her children like this. They cannot understand how she can have done such a thing. But it is all too understandable. From childhood, this woman was taught to hate Jews and to dream of martyrdom. She was part of an obscene death cult founded in irrational hatred, which indoctrinates people from the cradle and prepares them not for life but for extinction in the cause of terror. While people refuse to grasp the real nature of this phenomenon, and seek explanations instead in wildly inappropriate theories about poverty and despair, this horror will never be confronted. Horrible beast, I hope she rots in hell. As well as her many apologists. I hope that there are afterlife rewards for the kindly Israeli security guard who showed her mercy and was murdered for his decency. "Death cult" is right. How many times have we heard radical Muslims say that "they love death more than (we, the Westerners) love life?" Why does no one believe them? How is it that if these so called "Hamas Militant" leaders believe so much in martyrdom that they only indoctrinate other people to become martyrs and not do it themselves? Very interesting, Melanie. I would add one thing--that on the psychoanalytic level this death cult is a communicable disease. It gets passed to the children via a classical cycle of abuse. It is incredible just how suggestible some people are to believing that because someone will die for a cause the cause is good and, worse, that their murderous tactics have a kind of special merit that marks them out as being excusable or even admirable. It is one of the warped but sad features of modern day societies that the more warped and extreme behaviour that one uses to follow a particular ideology the more attention one will garner in the media and the more respectful some journalists will be in their questioning...truly weird... It is so nice to remember the uncompromising words of Bob Geldoff when, at the time of Live Aid, on being presented at a reception to an African Dictator, he said, as he shook hands "Was it these hands personally that murdered so many of your people?"
The true sadness of this situation is almost impossible to comprehend. I don't think this detracts from the point - since it's really about motivation etc. - but it ought to be noted that the final "words" of a suicide bomber are often written for them, and thus give us little insight into their mindset. More insight into the mindsets of those who send them out (and, as is mentioned above, don't consider going themselves), though. Just an aside, though perhaps further evidence that bombers are overall just tools of whoever packages them off. Palestinian society is so brutal, nihilistic, primordial and anti Semitic that Israel must separate totally from these people. I would finish that fence or wall and build it as high as a skyscraper. There are nutcases everywhere -- cf. the German cannabilism case -- who obtain gratification from contemplating their own death and dismemberment. I think this woman was cracked to begin with. That's not to say Hamas et al. aren't blameworthy. They're even more culpable to the extent that they take advantage of nuts like Reem al-Rayashee. I think that is an astute observation - perhaps combine 'mentally unstable' with 'an element of genuine grievance' and introduce such a person to a ruthless manipulator who offers such an individual a chance to 'do something' within a radical ideology that takes away any sense of personal responsibility for the damaging consquences of that individual's actions and there a very dangerous combination of factors are set in motion. Many years ago researchers studied the personalities of the active members of IRA terrorist cells and concluded that most of them had psychopathic personalities and concluded that the IRA provided all the ingredients for such people to become involved with fervour, to committ terrorist atrocities directed by others and to feel justified and no sense of personal responsibility or remorse. I guess Hamas et al are similar.

They settled the area legally and received a U.N. mandate to establish a state. Immediately afterward, they were attacked by the surrounding Arab states.
