Now the police are unable to hold the line against the mob. In both Cheshire and Strathclyde, police were attacked by gangs, in one case after they had gone to the help of a fire crew which was being attacked by thugs. Is our society simply disintegrating?

It's not only in the UK. Recently in Melbourne, Australia, some paramedics attending an assault victim outside a nightclub were attacked.

It's time the police adopted a "Zero tolerance / get VERY tough" attitude.

Beware of the 'zero tolerance' approach - this is a catch-all phrase that is dangerous.

Remember - with zero tolerance, you will get zero co-operation in return. When it comes to convicting people of very serious crime you have to have co-operation.

If your clumsy zero tolerance attitude has alienated the majority - dont expect anyone to come forward and tell you who stabbed some poor 9 year old school boy.

The police need to learn to 'respond' to things in a way that is fair and balanced - if they start getting tough with youngsters the biggest price will be paid by bereaved families of serious criminals because ordinary tykes will side with them

Just read the papers for goodness sake
