Something of the knight
Day one of the new Tory dawn, and Michael Howard is making the right strategic noises. He is casting himself as a one-nation leader, which indeed he has to be if he is ever to become Prime Minister. Accordingly there are overtures to Ken Clarke, a word for people in deprived areas and a pledge for a new politics based on 'rigorous honesty'. Well now, that would be a new politics indeed . He will lead the party, he says, from the centre. Ah, the centre ground of politics -- the only problem is defining it. You can only hope your Howard is as decent, politically skilful and as genuinely fond of his people as ours is. If Michael Howard wishes to lead the Tory party from the centre then he must grab it by the balls and squeeze until it agrees to agree. If his grip is strong enough, hearts and minds will follow. But despite his most hated status, Labour & Lib Dem have polled about 60% of the vote in Folkstone without getting sufficiently organised to vote him out. As a conservative, I am rather encouraged by the comments made by the Lib Dem chairman today concerning their strategy of decapitation of the Tory Leadership. Such a strategy is essentially negative and cynical, as it the wider unofficial agreement between Labour and the Lib Dems to concentrate resources within target seats on an anti-Tory basis. This behaviour basically brings politics into direpute - it can and often does work short term but in the long term, less so, because voters in the end feel cheated and taken for granted by such tactics. Witness the initial success of George Bush Snr and John Major with negative campaigning - but it didnt work for them next time around. Never forget why the Major government fell so dramatically from grace - it came over as fundamentally cynical and incompetent, whereas New labour seemed to often the hope of a positive program of national revival. Six years on, it is New Labour who look cynical and incompetent and the Lib Dems just plain cynical. However the Tories are putting forward a positive agenda which is catching peoples imagination.
