America's satellite spy chief. Lt Gen James Clapper, has now said that Saddam did indeed conceal WMD in Syria shortly before the war. This is what the Israelis reported before war broke out, but of course this was ignored by the western anti-war media. Clapper also says that after Baghdad fell, the Iraqis took considerable trouble to conceal their WMD programme. This echoes the report by David Kay, who detailed the extraordinary lengths to which Sadam had gone to conceal an entire clandestine biological weapons programme from the UN inspectors. Of course Saddam hid all this stuff, whether inside or outside Iraq -- maybe both. On the basis of the evidence and by all the rules of rationality and logic, no-one but a fool or brainwashed bigot would think otherwise. But alas, that's exactly who we've got running our media and much of our political class.
Interesting article. I especially liked the view that what we saw on our TV screens in April; what was viewed by US troops; what was described by all journalists (BBC and otherwise!) as "looting"; and what was described by US troops as "looting" was not in fact looting but clandesting attempts by Iraqi scientists to hide the evidence of WMD.
These would be the same scientists who were cowed by Saddam Hussein and wished to spill the beans on his regime?
I also like the attempt to equate this non-serving officer's opinion with the report by David Kay. Kay says there were attempts to hide WMDs from the UN inspectors. This officer says the hiding was happening in April. As any fool knows, there were no UN inspectors in Baghdad in April. Clearly they don't sing from the same hymn sheet.
The fact remains that the UK and US weren't prepared to give the inspectors any more time to find WMDs, despite Iraq being a country bigger than France. If they can't find them now, why should the inspectors have been told they were failing in not finding them themselves?
And as for the benefits of regime change: no-one denies the benefits; one also cannot deny that war for the purpose of regime change is illegal under international law.
I would like to think most people would try to help a person being mugged in a park despite the "Keep off the Grass" sign. In any case, the war was legal based on Saddam's non-compliance with resolution 1441, so the regime change as a beneficial side-effect is not something worth agonising over.
The issue was not about giving the inspectors more time, but a decision not to give Saddam yet another opportunity to shirk his responsibilities. He could have complied with 1441 if he had wished to, but his last bluff failed - no doubt his meeting with Tony Benn and the sight of large crowds at anti-war protests made him think an attack would not happen. Strange to think all those people marching against the war paradoxically made the war inevitable. We'll probably never know, but perhaps Saddam miscalculated that democracies were incapable of standing up to his tyranny.
If we had given him more time he would waited until he had an opportunity to reconstitute his weapons programmes.
